DNS Propagation Explained

If you make changes to your domain name or domain name host then DNS changes occur and you need to wait for propagation throughout the Internet to complete. Propagation usually takes 3 days, but it could take up to 8-10 days. During the propagation process, traffic may or not follow the new change path. One person may see the new setting while someone else will see nothing or the old one path. This is normal during propagation since the changes must filter throughout the entire Internet.

Remember that just because you go to the new route when you type in the domain name does not mean that propagation is complete and that everyone else sees your change.

DNS stands for Domain Name Service. When you type in a domain name you go to a website using a domain name that uses DNS. Your request to find that domain name goes to a primary or secondary DNS server that is usually administered by your ISP. The local DNS server checks its records on a database to see if it knows what IP address for that domain points to. If it finds the domain name and IP address, then it directs you to that IP address. If it does not find the domain name, your local DNS server then queries the authorative DNS server, and the Authorative DNS server will tell your local DNS server what IP address the domain is located at if it finds it in its database.
