The TLD .name is a generic top level domain proposed for the use of individuals real name, nicknames, screen names, pen name, pet name or any other special names. This TLD became available Domain Name websites around January 2002. The TLD .name is intended for use by individuals and personalities, both fictional and real.
At the initial release of the TLD .name the net only offered third level personal domain name registration, separating names by two dots. For example www.jayne.smith.name. Second level names are only separated by one dot. For example, www.jaynesmith.name. The second level domain space is more popular and is in strong demand.
Domains can be registered on the second level (jayne.name) and the third level (jayne.smith.name). You can then have unique email address like Jayne@jayne,name. When the .name domain was first launched, only third level registrations (and forwarded e-mail addresses) were available; it is only later, in January 2004 that second level registrations were made available as well. The original intended structure of names was first.last.name, so that an individual could get a domain corresponding to his or her actual name. When a domain is registered on the second level (smith.name), third level domains or e-mail addresses under this second level (jayne.smith.name and email@example.com) are associated with the second level domain, and may not be registered with the .name registry. Other objects like jaynesmith.name and jayne.jaynedoe.name remain unaffected.
