What is a Domain Name?
This is a name that will identify one or more IP addresses on the Internet.. For example, the domain name stevebigstore.com might have on IP address whereas google.com might have a dozen IP addresses. Domain names are also called URLs and these URLs are used to identify particular web pages.
Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. Some examples of the TLDs Top Level domains are
com - commercial business
biz - Business .
gov - Government agencies
edu - Educational institutions
org - Organizations (nonprofit)
net - Network organizations
ca - Canada
info – Information
Because the Internet is based on IP addresses like 192.165.23.0, not domain names like stevesbigstore.com, every Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP addresses.
Your domain name and related IP address are stored in a database with every other domain name and associated IP address. When visitors enter your domain name into a web browser, your domain works like an address book and forwarding service by forwarding visitors to the IP address where your Web site is located. We use domain names instead of IP addresses because most people find it easier to remember a name rather than a series of numbers.
