What is a Domain Name Registrant?
The domain name registrant is the individual or organization that holds the internet rights to use a specific domain name. This person or legal entity bound by the domain terms of service agreements, after certain conditions are met, and upon payment of the registration fees, holds the right to use that specific domain name for a specified period of time.
When registering a domain name there are four contacts that are required. They can all be the same or vary and these contacts will receive future renewal notices. These contacts include the registrant, the administrative, the technical point of contact and the billing contact for the domain. Again all of these contacts will receive all renewal and other administrative notices regarding the domain name. Note that when you register a domain name, your domain name registrant will be person or an organization or company that holds the rights to the registered domain name. The Registrant is the only entity responsible for the application and use of the domain name along with any services activated on that domain name. The Registrant is also responsible to communicate any change to data given at the time of registration.
This person, organization or company will be the "legal entity" bound by the terms of the Registration Agreement. The Registrant is also known in technical terms as the "SLD holder". This stands for the holder of a Second Level Domain. A domain name is assigned on a first come basis first served basis; a domain name cannot be booked in advance.
