SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, which is the standard security technology for creating an encrypted link between a Web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the Web server and browser remains private and secure. All Secure Link SSL certificates from Network Solutions are encrypted at 128 bits, and can support up to 256-bits, which is the highest encryption level available. Your site visitors will know they have created an SSL link with your web server when they see the "https://" at the beginning of the URL as well as the padlock icon in the lower right-hand frame in their web browser.
Search Engine Optimization, otherwise known as SEO, is the art, science and skill of making web pages attractive to search engines. The goal is to improve the web sites ranking on various search engines.
The better optimized the page is, the higher position of a rank it will achieve in search engine result listings. This is especially critical because most people who use search engines only look at the first three pages of the search results, so for a page to get high traffic from a search engine, it has to be listed in those pages.
A domain name is essentially a signpost on the Internet. Almost every website you've ever been to, and every email you've ever composed, has used a domain name in its address. The Domain Name System (DNS) helps users to find their way around the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address – just like a telephone number – which is a rather complicated string of numbers. It is called its "IP address" (IP stands for "Internet Protocol").
But it is hard to remember everyone's IP address. The DNS makes it easier by allowing a familiar string of letters (the "domain name") to be used instead of the arcane IP address. So instead of typing 192.0.34.65, you can type www.icann.org. It is a "mnemonic" device that makes addresses easier to remember.
Translating the name into the IP address is called "resolving the domain name." The goal of the DNS is for any Internet user any place in the world to reach a specific website IP address by entering its domain name. Domain names are also used for reaching e-mail addresses and for other Internet applications.
The World Wide Web is a massive collection of web sites, all hosted on computers (called web servers) all over the world. The web server (computer) where your web site's html files, graphics, etc. reside is known as the web host. Web hosting clients simply upload their web sites to a shared or dedicated web server, which the ISP maintains to ensure a constant, fast connection to the Internet.
A Web Hosting company provides you space on their web server which allows you anyone on the Internet to view your web site. Web Hosts charge on a monthly basis and provide differing levels of service.
Electronic mail, also known as e-mail or email, is the most widely used service offered by the Internet today. It allows those people who have an email address to send and receive electronic letters. Those are much like postal letters, except that they are delivered much faster when sending near by or over a long distance. To send or receive an email, a computer with a modem and telephone line or cable connection connected to the Internet, and an email program are required. Several formats exist for email addresses. The most common will look like username@domain.com. Email messages are sent mostly by text, and sometimes by HTML style.
A shopping cart is a piece of internet software that acts as an online store's catalog and ordering process. Usually, a shopping cart is the interface between a company's Web site and its infrastructure, allowing consumers to select merchandise; review what they have selected; make necessary additions or modifications; and purchase the merchandise found on the web site. This allows customers to easily pick several products on-line and check out to an order page when finished shopping.
