What is a domain name?
Computers on the Internet identify websites through a number called an IP address. The address looks like 192.168.23.123. One can consider an IP address similar to a phone number. IP addresses are hard to remember so you now have domain names that point to the IP address The computers connected to the internet are configured to recognize domain names, then lookup the IP number and direct the browser to the correct website.
The domain name generally consists of two parts. For example with mydomain.com, the .com is called the top level domain (TLD). Other top level domains are .biz, .net, .edu, .org and more. 'mydomain' is the unique name or second level domain.

It is possible for you to create a subdomains of the domain name mydomain.com, such as, infopage.mydomain.com which will point to another page in your website. Subdomains are also known as hostnames.
When you register your domain name, it will be added to a database of all currently registered domain names. The following information about your domain name is recorded, such as contact, administrative contact, billing, and the domain name server (DNS) is added to the database. Now when anyone searches for a website, they will accessing the large database of domain names and this database directs them to the correct DNS to access their database to find which computer the website is on.
Domain names can have up to 67 characters; however, we recommend that you are less than and not longer than 58 characters. This recommendation is due to some browser limitations so to keep it below that length for greater compatibility across the internet. A domain name can contain letters, numbers and dashes. Domain names cannot begin or end with a dash, and no spaces are allowed before, between, and after your domain.
